The annual pilgrimage by Buddhists celebrates the Buddha’s visit to Sri Pada (2237m). The peak has been venerated ever since as it is believed to enshrine the Buddha’s footprint. The pilgrim season extends from December to April and attracts thousands of Buddhists from all over the world. They climb the peak through picturesque forested paths via Hatton or Ratnapura. The trek lasts from midnight to early dawn, allowing pilgrims to witness the unforgettable spectacle of the sunrise over the sacred peak. The footprint at the summit is believed by Buddhists to have been left by Buddha, while for Hindus, it is the footprint of the god Shiva. Muslims and Christians believe it was left by Adam.
